Remembrance Day
Remembrance Day
To create a public art display that would honor and commemorate the 57,705 Queenslanders who enlisted and served in the First World War. The art work had to be designed so that individuals from across the state could contribute to the artwork display. As the client did not provide a creative brief for the commemorative artwork, it was up to both Pico Play and Pico Plus to suggest options for consideration. The Pico collaborative process reversed engineered the clients desired outcomes and put forward a creative concept that ticked all the boxes while emotively engaging with the general public and inspiring them to contribute.
Solution
The combination of community engagement with the artwork supported by a personalised interactive digital experience created a must-see centenary tribute to the soldiers. Over 250,000 paper poppy templates were posted out to people over a five month period who posted them back completed and ready to be loaded into the artwork. Simultaneously people also were directed to a web site landing page where they could create their own digital poppy tribute to be shown on the screens next to the display. The final completed artwork travelled 3,960km for a public roadshow that involved 5construction and display venues, across the state of Queensland. Design consideration needed to be implemented that allowed the 24-meter art piece to be broken up and packed in such a way that it would fit onto a B-Double Road Train. Load and unload considerations needed to be met to ensure that the artwork’s faux sandstone plinth and 8 large Perspex letters were not compromised in any way. Over 6 tons of ballast weight was also created to fit comfortably in the base of the plinth to withstand cyclonic winds that are common place in North Queensland.
